What have we done in 365 days?

This is the last post of the year as I go off for an ibreak (don’t ask). Let’s take the opportunity to look back over the last year and forward to the next.

It’s time to award my blog Awards 2009.

The winner of the Most Influential Digital Marketing Thing of the year goes to…iPhone Apps. Those little beasts have transformed mobile marketing. Well done Steve.

Most Unfathomable Digital Marketing Opportunity goes to…Twitter. Apart from the fact that it’s losing money (so far) the value that users perceive in this new kid on the social media block remains unclear as we enter the second decade of the 21st Century. If you’ve tweeted or followed you’ll have gone through the twitcurve (TM): enthusiastic for a month, confused for a month, bored for a month, and then you stop using it.

Consumer Site of the Year goes to http://www.boots.com.  Jesse Boot would be proud of how the old company has taken to the digital world. Simple, clean, easy..and that’s just the marketing department. Of course not! Well done chap/esses.

Business Site of The Year goes to the ever entertaining http://whiteboard.ups.com site. Take the time to look at the work that’s gone into this. Ok not cheap but it is gorgeous. We’ve said before that effective B2B sites only do one thing – provide value to your customer. This does it in spades. Copy the thinking not necessarily the budget.

And what of 2010? The Big Thing For Next Year Award goes to…mobile marketing. Yes, after years of being Cinderella, this bit of digital marketing will go to the ball in the new year. My call is that you should take a good look at your brand, propositions, products, prospects and customers and explore where mobile can make your brand big in 2010. Think ‘how my customers can use a bit of marketing to add value when they’re on the train/sofa/pull’. Here’s a site that is useful for keeping up with it all and stimulating your mobile grey matter: http://www.mobilemarketingwatch.com/

And if you thought sometime during the year that maybe marketing and you weren’t suited then stop for a second and thank the heavens you didn’t choose banking after uni. Have a good one, you marketer you.

Absulutely agree best opportunity of 2009 goes to Twitter, they have just signed a deal with Google so are now making money but what unlikely contender.

Apps are amazing avancement to social media (they have allowed the meduim to go mobile and global) creating evenmore engagement for digital marketers. The iphone seems like a game changer when you add these factors up will make 2010 a very exciting and maybe infuriating to some sections of advertising community.

I think Boots gets it right with engagement offline (store cards that are easy to understnd and use) and online too. All in all a great look at the events of 2009.
